What to Do And Not to Do When Leaving a Legal Job

What to Do And Not to Do When Leaving a Legal JobWhat to Do And Not to Do When Leaving a Legal JobIn any legal career, inevitably, youll eventually leave a job. Maybe youll move on for a better opportunity, perhaps youll decide the law isnt for you and move to a new career, or perhaps youll need to take some time off for personal reasons or to figure out your next step. Whatever your reason for leaving your job, its important to do it correctly so that you keep your reputation intact and dont burn any bridges Here are some suggestions on what to do, and not to do, when youre leaving a legal job. What to Do Its normal to feel anxious or guilty about leaving a job, but theres no need to stress out needlessly. Follow these tips, and youll leave on the best possible terms. Just Do It If you want to quit, and youre sure its the right choice, dont needlessly delay. People can tell when youre not engaged, and no one wants a deadweight employee hanging on for months or years on end. Yes, leaving can be scary, but its better to pull the plug and move on if this isnt the right job for you any longer. Everyone will be better off, in the end, and every day you delay is another day that your employer is relying on you and giving you additional work to do Wrap Things up Properly Typically, youll provide some notice when you quit (two weeks is traditional, but some other period might be more appropriate in your situation). Theres rarely going to be a good time to quit a legal employer, but if youre at trial, or working on a huge deal, do your best to leave after the case is finished. In any case, be sure youve documented any processes that need to be documented and left notes in any files you were working on, to help orientate your replacement. If you can, its often appreciated to offer to be informally on-call for a few days or weeks after your official departure, just in case any major questions come up. Even if no one calls, it makes you look responsible and helpful. Say Your Goodbyes Personally When you decide to leave, word will probably spread quickly, so think about who needs to know ASAP. Is there a partner you worked with frequently? Place a courtesy call (or drop by in person) as soon as youve given notice. Yes, it might be easier to let HR spread the word, but people do appreciate a personal heads-up when youve had a close working relationship. In the same vein, be sure to have personal conversations with the people you care about in the firm, from the receptionist you say Hello to every day, to your coworkers and assistants. Dont schwimmbad mouth anyone (see below), but taking a few moments to express your gratitude for their ongoing support can help smooth your departure and lead everyone to think of you fondly after you go. What Not to Do Now, here are some things you really ought not to do when leaving a legal job Dont Delete Your Email If youre working in a legal context, chances are good all of your emails are being automatica lly backed up, so deleting it wont do much good. And you still shouldnt do it Deleting your email en masse makes it look like youve got something to hide, and might be a violation of your employers data retention policy. Check with your employer about what, if anything, they want you to clean up in your files or email, and strictly comply with the instructions youre given. Anything else just looks suspicious (and probably wont even do any good if youre trying to hide something). Dont schwimmbad Mouth Anyone in Your Exit Interview The exit interview, should you be subjected to one, is not the place to express your true grievances. Its a formality, and you should treat it as such. Say nice, vague things about your employer and your boss, and get out of there as quickly as possible. Youre quitting for a reason, but no good can come of being honest in the exit interview The word always gets around, and you might need these connections later, even if it doesnt seem like it at the time. E xpress appreciation for all youve learned, and move on. Dont Be Unprofessional Even if you hate the job youre leaving, go graciously. (Theres a funny photo of me looking gleeful as I cleaned out my law firm office for the final time, but I did that late at night so no one at the firm would see it) Have an elevator pitch ready to go when people ask you why youre moving on. Something along the lines of, Ive enjoyed my time here, and Ive learned a lot, but Id like to do more client-facing work, is sufficient. No one cares about your reasons unless you make a big deal out of how miserable you were, and how happy you are to be leaving. A little tact goes a long way

How much money do you want to make Heres what you have to do to get there

How much money do you want to make Heres what you have to do to get thereHow much money do you want to make Heres what you have to do to get thereI told my boss I wanted to make more money.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreI had been working at an advertising agency in downtown Chicago for about two years. During those two years, I had gone from an entry-level copywriter responsible for writing social media copy for small, local brands, to writing billboard copy for national brands. I was the best writer at the agency, and I got to work on some of the agencys biggest projects. The problemI was barely making more than a barista. What do I have to do to make more? I asked. My boss and the company chairman sat opposite me in the back office. Dont Let Friends Sabotage Your Job Search

Dont Let Friends Sabotage Your Job Search Dont Let Friends Sabotage Your Job Search It’s terrible to contemplate, but it’s been known to happen: friends, colleagues and even your own family members can sabotage your job search efforts. They may or may not do it deliberately, but the people closest to you can sometimes be impediments to change when you are  trying to make major life transitions. Monitor social media Be vigilant about keeping tabs on your online profile and tracking the information that’s out there about you. Again, take a proactive stance you can even set up a Google alert for your name, so that you’ll swiftly receive any new information that pops up about you. Keep in mind that social media can be a powerful job-searching tool, and that potential employers use it to look for both the positive and the negative when vetting new hires. Maintaining tight control of your online reputation is critical. As social media goes, what you dont know can truly hurt you. Build your self-confidence Know that youve got what it takes to get hired an easy fact to forget in the face of job rejection, particularly when those around you arent doing much to help you boost your confidence during your job search. Dont listen to the naysayers, keep your accomplishments in mind, and remind yourself that reaching for new goals is challenging, but success makes the challenge worthwhile. After a Break, a New Door Opens in Real Estate

After a Break, a New Door Opens in Real Estate After a Break, a New Door Opens in Real Estate Susan LoGuidice returned from a sabbatical in Europe with not one, but two interviews lined up.To hear Susan LoGiudice tell it, getting laid off from her real-estate management job last December was a chance to have a moment of freedom.“I looked at it like I had been paroled,” the UpLadder member said. “I had been working for six years straight, and I needed a break. So I mentioned to a friend who lives in Europe that I wanted to get away, and he told me he was going to Monte Carlo and could use some company, so I booked my flight and took off in early January.”In addition to travel plans, she made some other plans as well. She was several credits shy of getting her master’s degree in strategic real-estate management at New York University. So she signed up for the spring semester. “I figured if it was difficult to find a job, I’d finish grad school instead,” LoGiudice said. “Either way, the result would be good.” And while she was not ready to go back to work rig ht away - savings and severance gave her a couple of months’ cushion - she did post her resume on Ladders and left one with a recruiter as well.So she took off for Europe feeling she would be able to relax and not think about work. And, just as she was enjoying her free time, LoGiudice received an e-mail from a recruiter when she was in Monte Carlo. While she was happy to have the contact, she followed up to say she would set up an interview once she returned. She said she didn’t feel she needed to head back to New York right away to pursue a job lead.“I needed to detox from the stress of the months leading up to the layoff,” she said. “Watching a company go through layoffs is emotionally and physically taxing.”So she continued her vacation. And, upon her return, there were not one but two job interviews waiting for her. “I got a call from the recruiter through Ladders just as I returned from Monte Carlo,” she said. Both jobs were appealing enough that she went on the first round of interviews for both real-estate opportunities.Still uncertain as to whether anything would pan out, she started classes at NYU and decided to pursue another adventure: working as an extra on TV shows. “I had never acted before, she said. “I always wanted to be an extra on a TV show, so I signed up at a casting agency. I got called to work on TV shows, like Law Order, Kings, Cupid, and Nurse Jackie, while I went on interviews for two different jobs.”It helped to have the distractions of school and TV work, she said. “The interview process was lengthier and required more effort than in the past,” she said. “The market was more competitive. I went on five interviews over two months. They even had me do some work to show them what I could do. And then, after all the interviews, it took about a month before one of the companies called to offer me the job.”She never doubted, however, that she wanted to stay in the real-estate business. “My expertise and interest was in real estate. I was confident in my ability to do the job,” she said. And while she concedes it’s a tough market right now, she states that, “it is cyclical.”She is now working as director of leasing for Vantage Properties of New York. Founded in 2005, Vantage describes itself as “one of New York’s leading investors in residential and retail properties. Today, our portfolio consists of hundreds of apartment and retail properties in some of the City’s oldest and most established neighborhoods.”It’s a job that is similar to her previous position but for a different market from the luxury market she used to work in. “It’s the same job, but a different type of product.”As for the challenges in her field, she said, “The market is tough when you have unrealistic expectations in a down market. “Sellers and landlords need to get over the fact that it’s not 2006 or 2007 anymore, and renters need to make a move,” LoGiudice said, “but they keep hoping they can get an even better price. Everybody is waiting. But people will always need a place to live. This isn’t the first recession we’ve been through.”So now, her schedule packed with work and graduate school, LoGiudice’s only regret is she didn’t get a lucky break working as an extra. She says she’s glad she took the time from work when she had the opportunity.“I think I was able to do it in part because I am naïve and optimistic,” LoGiudice said, laughing. But she is serious about the importance of giving yourself a break. “At the end of the day, panicking wasn’t going to help me get a job any quicker. I looked at the layoff as an opportunity to regroup, relax, evaluate my options, and do things I wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to do.“If you are laid off, you should definitely post your resum e, maximize your use of recruiters and tell everyone you meet that you are looking for a job. You do have to put yourself out there. But look at it as an opportunity to do something you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t because you were stuck at work.“Be confident in your abilities. Just take it one day at a time and enjoy your life.”

Compensation Tactics to Retain Mission-Critical Talent

Compensation Tactics to Retain Mission-Critical Talent Compensation Tactics to Retain Mission-Critical Talent Compensation Tactics to Retain Mission-Critical Talent Rossheim With unemployment low and highly-skilled professionals in high demand, its time to reevaluate your compensation strategy to help retain top performers. Otherwise its way too easy to lose key people to the competition. We spoke with a range of experts about how you can offercompetitive compensationtoretain mission-critical talent. Simplicity and clarity are key to pay satisfaction. Your compensation strategy should be pithy enough to serve as an elevator pitch to retain top performers. Mark Stocker, president of recruiter SAN Inc., says there are two keys to making this happen. First, create a simple compensation plan that doesnt change. Second, allocate a much greater proportion of your compensation budget to people who have great success and long tenure. Sales commissions at SAN start at 25 percent and reach up to 50 percent, with equity kicking in along the way. Its key to be clear about compensation from the start of an employees relationship with the company, says Stocker. Speak to values that Millennials respect. Millennialsnow dominate the workplace, and they typically have compensation expectations that your company would be wise to meet. Millennials expect fairness, communication, and advancement, says Mykkah Herner, a compensation analyst at PayScale. Thats why companies are showing employees market pay data. Otherwise, if they dont, higher performers especially are a flight risk. More frequent, smaller rewards can appeal to many workers. In our ever-changing economy, workers respond to financial rewards that come early and often. As annual performance appraisals give up round to more frequent evaluations, compensation may take a parallel track. A lot of companies are not good at giving people good raises at the beginning of their careers, says J.D. Conway, a recruiter at software vendor BambooHR. We give employees money in small pieces as part of employee recognition, which they interpret as better growth and progression. Consider alternatives to ranking performance. What if to limit attrition in a tight labor economy you need to reward employee performance thats in the top 50 percent, not just the top 5 percent? Its in this context that many employers are deemphasizing forced rankings and coming up with new ways for employees to distinguish themselves. Some companies are asking employees to show me that you deserve this, says Herner. Theyre adjusting compensation plans generationally. Other companies are rewarding groups of employees for their success as a project team. Know that your competitors may well raise their offers. If you believe a key employee has unrealistic expectations about how big an offer she might get from a rival company, think again. A couple of years ago, we would say, Hey, this candidate has to be offered more money, and companies would balk, says Joe Giacomin, a recruiter with the automotive practice of Angott Search Group. Now companies dont even question it if theyre determined to attract top talent. You may need to revise your thinking about counteroffers. If youve written off an employees presentation of an outside offer as a poison pill to your relationship, you may need a rewrite to retain top performers. Were seeing a big increase in counteroffers, says Giacomin. In the past, it was a real stigma to accept a counteroffer, and companies would say, Pack up your gear and have a nice life. But these days, the employer doesnt seem to be holding it against the person. Consider giving really big rewards to really big achievers. Giving your top performers a big chunk of the dollars they bring in may be painful but its less painful than losing them and their networks. Giacomin says that in the OEM automotive parts industry, most bonuses are in the 10 to 20 percent range, but occasionally theyre 30, 40 even 50 percent. But beware the perils of super rewards for superstars. Some organizations pull aside large resources for their top one to five percent of performers, and give them more pay, bigger bonuses, and better mentoring, and professional development opportunities, says Dow Scott, professor of human resources at Loyola University Chicagos Quinlan School of Business. But the other 95 or 99 percent can figure out whos getting the lavish attention, and they dont like being left out. Restricted stock is getting more respect than stock options. Equity is always attractive, and your top people may bolt without it. But wise employees wont accept equity in your company in just any form. The attraction of stock options fell off in the 2007-2009 recessions, says Scott. Companies have had to move more toward giving restricted stock, so now employees have something even if it loses values.

A Day in the Life of a Small-Firm Private Banker

A Day in the Life of a Small-Firm Private Banker A Day in the Life of a Small-Firm Private Banker 4:00 a.m.: Get up. My day begins early, when I get up and review everything that came in the night before. Since we don't have a massive equity strategy team, I'm constantly reviewing outside research on my clients' holdings, which we subscribe to. I spend most of my morning reading up to see what the latest thinking is. I stay glued to the TV and PC at home because I'm on the West Coast and I don't want to be commuting when the market opens.6:30 a.m.: The opening bell.7:30 a.m.: Once the market is open and I'm OK with what's going on, then I shower and get dressed and everything else, and head into work. I got a Sirius satellite radio in the car just so I could listen to Bloomberg radio on my drive in.8:15 a.m.: At the office, client calls. Once I get in the office, it's all about the clients. I'm on the phone, sending e-mails, planning ahead, doing everything I can to not only meet their needs, but anticipate them.1:00 p.m.: The closing bell. The market closes at 1 p.m. my time, which is great. That allows me to get out of the office and go see clients without worrying about anybody's portfolio. 1:30 p.m.: Lunch with members of the local chamber of commerce. I belong to all the local business groups, and I'm there whenever they have conferences or luncheons or whatever. Any time I can be in a room with successful business people, I'm there. Sometimes it's afternoon, sometimes it's evening, but whenever.2:30 p.m.: Client meeting at his office. Clients appreciate it when you go to them, and I'm there with my laptop and a wireless card so that if there are questions, I'm right there in my network pulling up their data without a problem, and they're still comfortable in their office or home.4:00 p.m.: Back to the office for more calls, e-mails, laying in moves or strategies as needed for the following day.5:00 p.m.: Heading home, which is unusual. If there isn't anything in the evening going on, I can be out of the office by 4 or 5 p.m., but that's usually just one or two days a week, usually Friday. My clients tend to be businesspeople, so we often meet after business hours so they can focus fully on their jobs. And I'll stay late a lot to ride herd on a major purchase or investment that I'm working on for a client.

Selling Self-Published Books at Barnes Noble

Selling Self-Published Books at Barnes Noble Selling Self-Published Books at Barnes Noble Programs at Barnes Noble make it possible for self-published authors and unproduced screenplay writers to get their work onto the (actual) shelves of  the Worlds Largest  Bookstore. Learn more about these significant Barnes Noble NOOK Press opportunities and Adaptive Studios innovations for content creators, below, and get some real-life hints that will help you get your own self-published book into a NOOK Press program. Self-Published Sales Opportunity at Barnes Noble Barnes Noble instituted in-store NOOK Press print-on-demand service for  self-published writers  in 2014. This program enables authors to submit their NOOK Press book for consideration for distribution in-store -  and even for inclusion in marketing programs - on a local, regional or national level, and even get included in critical store marketing events such as book signings. In June 2016, exploiting the power of its store presence, the enhanced NOOK Press program began to offer “coordinated, national distribution for self-published authors who will benefit from in-store placement at Barnes Noble stores and online at BN.com, according to chief digital officer, Fred Argir. This is a significant development for self-published writers  because it represents an opportunity for books to have an in-store, on-shelf, physical presence -  the same as a book from a traditional publisher. In the best-case scenario, it can close the gap in reader and  media perception between traditional and self-published books. This also represents an opportunity for Barnes Noble to sell some books. The 640 bricks and mortar locations in 50 states remain a destination for  book  and cappuccino lovers. With the increased importance of author-reader engagement to the marketing efforts, this represents a significant  competitive advantage over Amazon. Of the program,  New York Times  best-selling author H.M. Ward said, “This is a game changer and shows that Barnes Noble has the capability to change the self-publishing model in a way that no one else can.” How BN NOOK Helps Authors Sell Physical Books Barnes Noble has a staff of category and department buyers who work to review the hundreds of thousands of books presented to them each year from traditional publishers. Needless to say, these book buyers are crazy-busy. What the NOOK Press Program does is give qualified self-published authors the opportunity to get their books reviewed by the very same buyers - in the Small Press Department buyers and in the appropriate categories -  that traditionally published books get. Because these folks are so busy, you need to meet certain parameters for a book to be considered. How to Sell Your Self-Published Books at BN Stores The qualifications for getting into the NOOK Press in-store program: The book must be published with NOOK Press - BNs own self-publishing arm.  The book must have sold at least 1,000  e-book  units (presumably through NOOK Press and not other digital presses) in the previous year. For self-published authors, getting to these levels isnt easy. But remember, these levels - plus any momentum that may be gained by the in-store print presence - help build sales momentum toward potential attention from a major publisher if thats your goal. Of course, sales numbers dont tell the whole story, so even if your sales figures hit the minimums, it doesnt hurt to give your pitch a little help. Heres how: Make Yourself a Viable Business Proposition for BN Make a good case to the buyer of why the BN stores should carry the book from a business perspective -  that is, show yourself as a professional who understands the bookselling business and respects that your book needs to sell. Make sure your book looks good with a  professional-looking cover  and interior  layout design and is  well edited.  Yes, this is self-publishing 101 but it  is  possible to not do those things and still move some  e-book  copies. Remember traditional publishers do a lot of manuscript vetting and book design packages. If you want your book to hold its own in that arena, youd do well to make sure the buyers reviewing it see you understand the demands of the print reader marketplace and that you show yourself as a worthy pro. Let them know about  your author platform. How are  you  working to keep your book and yourself in front of people? Blog, radio,  Twitter  followers, speaking on your subject expertise â€" your media platform is important to those who want to sell your book. List where you regularly contribute and/or have appeared. If the book is of local interest, make sure to let them know.  Self-published books of local interest generally do better. Even if they can be enjoyed broadly (like a novel), books tied to a specific area generally start out stronger in that region. So, promotion can start where that information is likely to resonate. Learn about  promoting  local books at Barnes Noble, below. Let the buyers know about any of your marketing efforts.  Make them understand you are a partner in this endeavor and are working towards book sales and media attention. If you have a  marketing or publicity plan, share it.Give the BN the social proof that will help them decide to sell your book.  Essentially youre saying, Dont go by me -  listen to what others are saying. Social proof can be blurbs from established writers, positive snippets of book reviews (digital, print or broadcast) or even reader comments (see caution, below.) Understand the competitive book publishing marketplace.  DO NOT mention or send links to Amazon or any other bookseller. This is poor publishing etiquette and should be avoided. If you are using Amazon reader comments as social proof, make sure you strip away the source. Getting Self-Published Books Promoted at Barnes Noble In-store appearances give authors the ability to easily sell print books, meet fans and, hopefully, draw in new audiences -  clearly an advantage for those who are self-publishing and also those who have a local following. Author Ward said, “Barnes Noble and authors can make self-published books available in stores and at events, which is something the competition can’t do.” Indeed this can be an advantage for authors with something to teach, or those who have enough of a fan following to draw a crowd. To participate at in-store events, NOOK Press authors have to have sold at least 500 e-books in the previous year, which makes them eligible for an event review from a Barnes Noble store manager. All that said, BN Store and Events managers want the same things that buyers do: to sell books. Which means bringing a crowd into the signing. So before you click on that email, get your marketing ducks in a row to appear worthy as an author  and  an event promoter. Local is good.  Remember, to draw an  in-person  crowd, you need to have a local fans/friends/relatives following (or loved ones willing to travel) or a book of local interest. If you can prove from previous experience you can get people to come, your chances will be better. To give some evidence of this…Show you can promote the event to your friends, fans and followers.  Do you have an author newsletter? Tons of local social media followers? Good relations with local press? A snail mail postcard list? A publicist? Are you willing to exploit all of those for the sake of getting people to your bookstore reading or signing? Demonstrate youre willing and capable of promoting your own event as much â€" or more â€" than the store will. Marketing, publicity plans and social proof are important here, too.  As above, your marketing and publicity plans are important here, too. Traditional book publishers create sales momentum at the  book launch with both author appearances  and  publicity during a book tour. That way, the consumer in the area whos a potential book buyer might hear the authors or books name from several places at once â€" newspaper, interview with author, radio spot. Use that same strategy here. If youre going to make a marketing effort around the time of signing, make it focused and local, and let BN know youre willing to coordinate efforts. This will call attention to -  and help them sell -  the book  after  the signing as well. And, if you get a signing, follow  best practices for author readings and signings.   Other Stories Get BN Opportunities As Well Though best-selling books are often repurposed into a variety of media, todays best-selling books and blockbuster films may also have origins in more modest media beginnings. Digital content, newspaper articles, video games, social media, amusement park rides or self-published books (like  The Martian)  may be the basis of the next big hit. And thats likely the impetus behind Barnes Nobles partnership Adaptive Studios, developed to give customers access to new books from reimagined and reinvigorated stories. Adaptive Studios (a media company whose credits include HBO’s  Project Greenlight) creates and acquires intellectual property such as unproduced screenplay ideas and scripts, and repurposes it across a range of traditional and digital entertainment platforms including books, film and TV properties, and digital series. Their Adaptive Books division will publish ten high concept books and graphic novels annually, sold through an exclusive retail arrangement with BN. Likely, the book presence will help grow audiences to boost the properties salability in other media -  and vice versa. T.J. 6 Solo Vacations You Can Take Between Jobs - The Muse

6 Solo Vacations You Can Take Between Jobs - The Muse 6 Solo Vacations You Can Take Between Jobs Leaving a job is exhausting. Starting a new job is also exhausting. So, what you do in between really matters. If you can afford it, it’s a good idea take some time off to refresh your brain and feel like you have no responsibilities, if only for a few days. Even better, you can use that time to do something you usually wouldn’t have time to do with a full time job, like travel somewhere you’ve been dying to go, or nurture a long-ignored hobby. And yet, far too many people feel like they don’t have enough time or money, or skip the trip because they don’t have a travel buddy (since everyone else, well, has a job) and forget there are other options. But in this case, traveling alone might be more of a pro than a con. And there are things you can do at every price point and at any distance from home that will give you the luxurious vacation of your self-care dreams. Here are six recharging ways to take a real vacation between jobs (no matter what budget you’re on) that will leave you energized and ready to dive into your next adventure. Price Point: $ Free or Cheap Solo Vacations 1. Tour Your Own City If you don’t have enough money to travel, the classic staycation can be a great way to go- as long as you’re intentional about actually doing things that feel special rather than getting sucked into running errands. When I left my last job, I spent the following week exploring New York in ways I never did while I was employed. I went to the Brooklyn Museum and got to enjoy popular exhibits with nobody else around. I walked around pockets of the city I hadn’t been to before, finding delicious tacos and other hidden gems. And I made a pilgrimage to my favorite tea shop that usually felt too far to visit. If you make it a point to push yourself out of your ordinary routine, a staycation can be just as satisfying as a regular one- and maybe more, since you don’t have to deal with the frustrations of actual travel! Courtesy of Erin Greenawald. 2. Escape Into a Good Book Okay, okay- I know this sounds cheesy, but hear me out. This really is less about reading as an escape, and more about using your time off to do something simple that feels luxurious. For me that’s getting to spend an entire day reading. For you it may be going on a nearby hike every day, binging all of your favorite movies, or sitting in a bubble bath (because how often do you really get to do that?). You should spend your time off between jobs doing something that sounds rejuvenating to you. If that means gallivanting to some remote beach, then read on. If that much travel sounds stressful and expensive but going to a midday yoga class (so you’re not packed in like a sardine) sounds amazing, then do that. Price Point: $$ Mid-Priced Solo Vacations 3. Visit a Faraway Friend A great way to travel on a limited budget is to visit a friend in a different city. If they have a spare room or a couch for you to crash on, you’ll just have to pay the cost of getting there and of any fun you have while you’re in town. Plus, you’ll get quality time with someone you might not get to see very often. When I was between jobs, I found this to be the most rejuvenating way to spend my time and ended up going on several trips like this. During the weekdays my friends would usually have work, so I’d get some time to myself to journal, finish some personal to-dos, or just laze around. Then, in the evenings and on the weekend, I would get to explore new-to-me cities through their eyes while processing my career transition with someone I trust. Remember- if you’re visiting during the workweek, your host might be worn out in the evenings, so don’t expect to go out on the town every night. Pick a friend you’d be thrilled to just chill on the couch and split a bottle of wine with, and this should be a refreshing trip for everyone involved. Courtesy of Jessica Greenwalt. 4. Do Normal-ish Things In a Different City Want something between a staycation and a vacation, where you can get out of your routines but also not feel bad if you spend half the day sleeping in? Find a super cute Airbnb (or regular BNB) in a nearby town and hunker down for a few days. Pick a place that’s far enough to feel away from home, but close enough that you won’t spend too much time traveling; aim for a place big enough to have some cute local coffee shops, maybe a gallery or two, but not so big that you’ll feel like you need to be out exploring all day. Jessica Greenwalt, founder of Pixelkeet, had such rejuvenating between-jobs trip from Berkeley to Portland that she now goes back periodically. She spends her time there doing things she could do at home- visiting favorite restaurants, getting out in nature- but being in a different city completely changes her perspective on them. “There are amazing hiking spots, and so many beautifully designed spaces to hang out and work on creative projects in,” she says. “For me there are fewer distractions in Portland than in the Bay Area, and I just feel a sense of calm when I'm there.” Pull out a map to see what cities are a stone’s throw away- or look on Google Flights for cheap and short flights available from your city. Even if you’ve never heard of a place before, do a little digging online to see if it has enough to keep you pleasantly occupied for a few days. Price Point: $$$ Expensive-But-Worth-It Solo Vacations 5. Better Yourself With a Retreat A retreat might sound like a lot to take on when you’re trying to take a break, but giving yourself something else to focus could actually help you disconnect from work. That’s how it was for Rachna Govani, now CEO and co-founder of Foodstand, who went to the surf and yoga school La Escuela del Sol in Costa Rica between two of her previous jobs. “My mind was pretty calm during two hours of surfing,” she says. “The waves battered me down so badly, I couldn't think of anything else.” Plus, going a retreat could allow you to devote uninterrupted attention to hobbies you wish you had time to nurture. Govani says her only goals were “read Cutting for Stone, get ample beach time, learn how to surf, and do yoga without worrying about rushing to a meeting or checking my email.” There are so many different types of retreats out there- yoga, running, art, meditation, and more- that you can search based on your interest to find the perfect match. Courtesy of Rachna Govani. 6. Find Somewhere All Inclusive While your first inclination when you have time off may be to explore the far corners of the earth, don’t forget that travel can also be draining. With only a few days to spare, you wouldn’t want to wear yourself out having to worry about planning every detail. That’s why an all-inclusive (or at least mostly inclusive) vacation- like a resort or a cruise- might be a great option. You can still go to some seriously beautiful places, but since a lot of the planning is done for you, you can just sit back and relax. There are even different deals available depending what type of trip you’re looking for: a resort could be perfect for just chilling by the pool, whereas if you want more adventure you might look for a deal that includes excursions. Chaya Cooper, a startup adviser and the founder and chief product officer of Click2Fit, chose a cruise because it was the perfect blend of relaxing and doing: “I wanted to spend the time on a beach in the Caribbean, but spending a week alone at a resort sounded incredibly boring, so waking up at a different island every day made for a great mix of chilling and exploring.” Plus, she met other solo travelers on the cruise, so it didn’t feel like she was on vacation alone. Discount sites like TravelZoo have deals on all-inclusive packages, so they’re usually a good place to start. You can also check with individual resorts or cruise operators for last-minute specials. Whatever you do, fill the time between your jobs with something you can’t fit in during a regular workweek- it might be awhile before you can take such a big step away from responsibility (and email) again.

Eases the Process of Starting a Career in the Federal Government

Eases the Process of Starting a Career in the Federal Government Eases the Process of Starting a Career in the Federal Government Eases the Process of Starting a Career in the Federal Government Eases the Process of Starting a Career in the Federal Government, July 10, 2010 By JD, USMC This Amazon.com review is from: Military to Federal Career Guide, 2nd Edition (Paperback) After 4+ years in the Marines I was ready for a break and ready to take advantage of the experience my military service gave me. Like all Marines (and I suspect other transitioning Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel) I was made to go through a rushed TAP/ TAMP class on how to get out of the military and be successful as a civilian. After I was forced through yet another power point numbing series of classes punctuated by mock interviews and civilian attire inspections, and after I was mentally preparing to EAS; my unit was deployed for 8 months. I got home and left the Corps 2 weeks after returning to CONUS. I hate long rambling reviews so Ill try to get to the book. After I worked my way through school with the help of my GI Bill (that didnt pay nearly all my education expenses) I found myself lacking a real plan. I started looking into careers in the Federal Government and was baffled and frustrated by USAjobs, Army Resume Builder and all the competition from those snot-nose kids whose parents paid their way through college while I was enjoying MREs and bottled water in a place whose name they never will care to learn. I got lucky and stumbled across an early run of the second edition of this book after it came out at the NY Book Expo of America last May. I worked through the book and the CD and I found the process much more manageable. What made it easy were the sample resumes from actual military personal. I could use their resumes as a starting point for mine. Like them, I found actual jobs on USAjobs and worked the language of the posting into my resume and cover letter. Then there are instructions in the book on how to submit your resume and how long you can expect to wait before you hear back. Additionally there are interview tips and pointers on how to follow up on submitted applications. Finally, in summation, I am personally satisfied with my results after putting in the effort and working through this book, hopefully you will be to. If not, thats OK. Just hope we both dont go out for the same opening. Cheers.
